High Speed 2 has been accused of cutting costs on the northern leg of its route in order to make up for overspending in the south, after it was revealed that only 2% of the Yorkshire line is to be built in tunnels, compared with nearly 30% of its track between London and Birmingham. Documents show 29% of the 140 miles (225km) of new high-speed line from the capital to the West Midlands will be through tunnels, to avoid disruption to communities and the landscape. In contrast, only 2% of the 123 miles of track running through Yorkshire, from the West Midlands to Leeds – the latest phase of the rail line to be planned – will run underground. Campaigners accused HS2 of dumping the costs from the first phase of the programme on to the latest phase, and forcing Yorkshire to pay for tunnels in London and the south-east. Full story here. Latest published documents relating to HS2 can be found here

As the government and others have recognised, to succeed in the future, Britain needs a more balanced, more productive economy. But how do we maximise Britain’s assets for the future and, in the process, increase our national productivity? How do we get the best out of Britain? This report sets out how High Speed Two (HS2) can help and, indeed, is already beginning to do so. HS2 Ltd held a series of round-table discussions with businesses, trade and sector bodies, universities, local authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships during 2017. The evidence gathered from those discussions has informed this report, providing evidence and feedback to understand the role that improved transport connectivity can play in helping to raise levels of productivity and growth in sectors and places across Britain.

Crossrail. Assembly of the first work of art being integrated into the Elizabeth line is underway as the first panes of glass have been fixed into place on the 120 metre long canopy at Paddington. A Cloud Index, designed by critically acclaimed artist Spencer Finch and funded by Heathrow and the City of London Corporation, is a cloudscape that has been printed onto the glazed roof of the new Elizabeth line station, making it one of the largest permanent art works ever created in the capital. Finch has hand-drawn 60 original pastels that combine to create a unique collage of clouds, that when printed onto the transparent canopy will appear to change according to the light, weather and the time of day. Given its unprecedented length, visitors will see the artwork in a new way depending on what way they enter, leave or move through the station. The canopy, which appears to float above the platforms 25 metres below ground, is a steel grid that holds 220 bespoke glass panels, each one weighing over a tonne. The hand drawn scene will be ‘painted’ onto 180 of the panels using ceramic dot matrix printing that not only creates the image, but also reduces solar glare into the station.
